30/100Incredibly underwhelming despite the interesting idea it leads with. Cute and fluffy... but that's it...?Continue on AniListI'm a HUGE fan of monster-taming stuff [Pokemon fan of 17 years] and overall find incredible amounts of enjoyment in monster-collecting games and other such things. My excitement led me to speedread this up until chapter 31ish, where my interest dropped off almost entirely and I was simply skimming chapters to get a grasp on what was happening. What it chooses to focus on is it's Achilles heel, at least in my opinion.
It starts off incredibly interestingly, but that's really all I can give it. The monster-taming ability is charming and so is the orphanage and the grandparents. This is all I can say really for it narrative-wise.
Despite it being a monster-taming manga, I find the monster design incredibly underwhelming. So far it's been either a big animal or an animal with an abnormal feature. This is incredibly boring as hell for me visually since I am a huge character design fanatic, and the only well-designed monster is Pi, but that's barely a compliment considering it's literally an eagle. You'd expect something with a cool name such as 'mystical butterfly' or whatever the hell it was to be interesting, or even 'queen bee' being imposing in some way or having royal features. Nope! Just normal -apparently giant- bugs. thanks, Very awesome. I get the impression that all of these animals he is taming are supposed to be lacking in design because they went ham on more 'important' monster designs later, but I'm not waiting it out to see a cool-looking animal for once in my life. A lot of manga has incredible monster designs despite it not being the focus, which is why it's bewildering to me that so little effort was put into these designs. Anyways, mandatory Diceyseraphim design rant over.
The focus is seemingly on the orphanage and the grandpa's shed and training. That's it. That's all this thing has been for 31 chapters. I understand a child's world is obviously small, but that doesn't seem to be the intent here? It just seems like very poor pacing. We've been warming up slowly but surely, yes, but it's taking far too long to actually get to a notable point. The last notable thing I remember was him finding out how to use APPRAISAL. THAT IS HOW SLOW THIS IS PACING-WISE. The formula seems to be tame monster -> train -> fight monster -> Sweet sappy fluffy moments. It's very droll for what I expected it to be, and the main character has had the unfortunate narrative choice of listening to adults and being a good kid with the combination of a -what seems to be- mother figure. This limits the character's movements so much that I don't even think he's done anything too crazy ever since meeting the grandparents. The formula does not help keep you awake reading it. Yes I am complaining about a child protag being a child protag. This should have opened with the idea that it's sweet fluffiness and that's all. I was hoping for some interesting happenings, but the most interesting thing that's happened for a bit was the protag doing some basic chemistry with his magic. There is no worries or opposition anywhere, and the grandpa figure is such a hindrance to the plot due to the fact every situation is literally under complete control with him there. He solved every and any problem in some way or another that has popped up, and it makes me SNORE!!!!! Let there be some actual conflict... some issues with monster taming sometimes... very flat characters getting developed in some way.... anything... please...
Anyways long story short I am shocked how this interesting idea somehow got executed in the worst way possible, and this might genuinely be the most boring thing I have ever read right next to Johnny Tremain. I SKIMMED. SKIMMMED SO MANY CHAPTERS. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I MISSED? Nothing. I looked at some of the pictures and read some words as fast as possible and could figure out roughly what was happening. And then i'd have to scroll to the end of the chapter because whatever I figured out is likely going to be the entire focus for that chapter. I'm not a huge fan of watching characters train or learn things fighting-wise, especially if it seems incredibly surface level. I would rather die than watch these kids dig ANOTHER pitfall and it work.
Do better, read something worth your time and stimulate your brain a bit by reading literally anything else..
