DESCRIPTION
Super serious Asahi Suzumura and laidback, easygoing Mitsuki Sayama might seem like an odd couple, but they made a deal; they'll vacation around the world and when they get back to Japan, they'll get married.
As they travel from country to country, the different people, cultures and cuisine they encounter begin to bring them closer together. After all they're not just learning about the world, but about themselves too.

80/100Even if BL isn't your cup of tea, give this manga a readContinue on AniListAs a lover of the BL genre, Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide stands out from the many works I’ve read as a genuinely wonderful work of art. The manga embodies the feeling of wanting to know more about other cultures and being open to new perspectives and ways of life, whether it is with regards to one’s sexuality or culture. I haven’t come across many manga quite like this one, with so much care, effort and research poured into it.
The art is one of this manga’s best attributes, with an attention to detail that is truly difficult to overlook. Some panels can reflect a cozy and warm atmosphere while others are jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The food art is an aspect of the manga that shouldn’t be ignored either, afforded the same level of artistic skill as the more impressive background art used to showcase the different tourist spots. The art truly exhibits its greatest strength, not in the larger-than-life sceneries and beautifully detailed architecture however, but in the smaller, more personal character-driven moments. The art heightens the emotional impact as we get to see what the characters are experiencing in a very clear way that really tugs on your heartstrings.
The main storyline connecting the manga’s more slice-of-life elements are that of two adult men, Mitsuki and Asahi, and their world trip spanning a variety of different countries and sampling whatever parts of the cultures they can within a limited amount of time. The two, who met in high school, embark on this very ambitious trip together as a way to get to know one another on a deeper level before getting married. While Asahi has his reservations about this, due to his internalized homophobia, Mitsuki gives him all the words of affirmation and hope he needs. That brings us to the next, and in my opinion, best aspect of the manga so far.
Though the characters don’t particularly stand out in the manga’s earlier chapters, they have distinctive personalities and are easy to get attached to over time. Mitsuki is a lovable wonderful goofball in stark contrast to Asahi who is more pragmatic and fastidious. Asahi gives off this understandable anxiety from time to time related to the many hassles that come with travelling, while Mitsuki is more laid-back and focuses on enjoying himself in the moment. Granted, both of them do end up enjoying themselves either way.
Something about the manga that I feel separates it from other stories of similar genre, is the setting of the relationship. Both are adults, in a relationship intending to get married eventually and on a trip for the entirety of the manga. I am of the opinion that most relationships are tested most severely during a trip of significant length. Lots of things tend to not go as planned and it’s important to find people to help you out especially if you are alone in a foreign country. You are left vulnerable to scammers and there’s also the fact that without doing proper research beforehand, your enjoyment of the trip itself is dampened. Having to deal with these possible problems with other individual can either be filled with a series of highs and lows or be an absolute nightmare. The setting only emphasizes the different facets of Mitsuki and Asahi’s wonderful relationship.
If you’ve read all the way to the end of this review, I couldn’t possibly thank you enough for the time you spent on it. This manga has brightened my day on multiple occasions and if I could convince even one more person to give it a chance, I would be beyond happy. I hope you have a great rest of your day/night :>
