DESCRIPTION
Theatrical follow-up to Overlord IV. The film will cover the "Holy Kingdom" arc.
After twelve years of playing his favorite MMORPG game, Momonga logs in for the last time only to find himself transported into its world playing it indefinitely. Throughout his adventures, his avatar ascends to the title of Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown.
Once prosperous but now on the brink of ruin, The Sacred Kingdom enjoyed years of peace after construction of an enormous wall protecting them from neighboring invasions. But, one day this comes to an end when the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth arrives with an army of villainous demi-humans.
Fearing invasion of their own lands, the neighboring territory of the Slane Theocracy is forced to beg their enemies at the Sorcerer Kingdom for help. Heeding the call, Momonga, now known as the Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown, rallies the Sorcerer Kingdom and its undead army to join the fight alongside the Sacred Kingdom and the Slane Theocracy in hopes to defeat the Demon Emperor.

20/100Insipid, uninspired and boringContinue on AniListIn short, it's shit. Overlords strengths are two-fold: it's a slightly above average power fantasy and the dynamics between Ainz and his underlings are fun to watch.
This movie manages to miss the mark entirely on both fronts. The vast majority of the story focuses on the usual cardboard cutout "characters" introduced as part of a new arc. Neia is a plank of wood. No characterization, no likability, no charisma. Just an empty, vacuous plot device that exists for Ainz to have someone to talk to in his limited scenes. If you expect to learn more about her other than the fact that she's good at archery and she wants to follow in her mothers footsteps then you're going to be disappointed. We've reached the point in anime where people working on a major, popular IP feel 3 sentences in a throwaway scene by a character we never even see again are enough characterization for what amounts to the deuteragonist of the story.
The other supporting character introduced is Remedios, a shouty, angry, rude, insolent, mean twat with perhaps the worst case of resting bitch face in all of anime. I'm not sure what the point of this character is exactly. She's right to doubt and be suspicious of Ainz's motivations as his intentions are exceedingly obvious. So it seems like the goal was to make her as unlikable as possible in order for the viewer to continue being okay with Ainz going full genocidal maniac? Who cares.
Albedo and Demiurge are barely in the movie and have almost no scenes with Ainz. So in essence the movie boils down to 2 hours of generic, boring dialogue between Ainz and Neia and Remedios being all angry and shouty. What exactly is supposed to be enjoyable about that?
The overarching plot is the same thing you've seen over and over again. Antihero manufactures crisis that only he can resolve so as to win over the favor of the people. There's no political intrigue, there's no tension because we know Ainz is invincible, there is no attempt to make you care about the fate of the people that will be ultimately affected by the plot. In summary, it's the same old "Ainz is super smart and powerful and everyone else is braindead and weak" slop you've gotten used to. To top it off, there is a random ass side quest that takes up a solid 20 minutes that is even more trite and insufferable than the main plot. This sort of thing isn't as egregious pacing wise in the normal serialized format but there are different rules when you make a movie. If you just stitch together 6 episodes and call it a day you get this, a sack of terribly paced garbage.
The art and animation is the same mediocre standard as the rest of Overlord. If you expected or hoped that a theatrical release would mean a bigger budget and more effort put into it, you'd be wrong. There are essentially only 2 action scenes in the entire 2+ hour runtime of any note and they're both insipid and uninspired.
Don't bother wasting your time with this one.

100/100Not for shonen loversContinue on AniListOverlord is not for shonen lovers. If you are looking for fights in Overlord, you will be disappointed. If you think this movie is boring, overlord is not for you. Overlord is not about Ainz. It's the closest anime to Game of Thrones. Political intrigue and character development are the strenghts of Overlord. Overlord is not a power fantasy.
Ainz is not living a dream but a nightmare. He is condemned to be alone because by nature he is a horrible human being who can not form connection. Ainz is a mad scientist. He is extremely apathetic and he view everything as experiments even his guardians. This is the guy who did not hesitate to edit Albedo. Ainz does not know what love is or he has a twisted view of love. In Overlord, Wars are constant. There is no justice. The concept of justice is explored in this movie with Ainz, Remedios, Neia and Demiurge and the conclusion is the winner is the one who is just. Overlord is a pessimistic book. There is no good guys in Overlord. Even the supposed good guys like the queen Calca enable xenophobia. Brain was a slave trader. All the characters are morally gray in Overlord. There is a lot of nuance. Even people as straight forward as Remedios and Neia have layers to them. Remedios is not only someone who is angry. She is someone Who feels deep guilt and regret and is having a severe break down in front of our eyes. Neia is a complex character looking for justice in her life. Neia is not the naive little girl. She herself is suffering another kind of trauma. She is also a victime of abuse and looking for companionship. This is why she is blind to the acts of Ainz.
Ainz is a villain. He is the worst main character and the best at the same time. The plot of this movie is how He is going to use the traumas of Remedios and Neia to establish supremacy. Because Ainz is smart, he learned from history it's not by fighting that he will be able to rule with an Iron fist. He has to brainwash the people, make them willingly submit to avoid rebellions and chaos.
Overlord is a World building show with Ainz as a recurring character. There is no main character in Overlord. Ainz can disappear when the author wants to or make him a side character like in the movie which makes it great. The movie covers what is unanimously considered by All Overlord fans to be the best arc of Overlord and Ainz has a minor role. If you did not like this movie, you never knew what made Overlord great in the first place. This is the arc culminating to the peak of the series where Political intrigue and tension is at an all time high. If you did not like the movie, it's better to give up now because from now on , there will be no longer any fights in Overlord. It will be dialogue heavy between multiple characters in Season 5 till the end. We are finally reaching the best parts. Dandadan and Jujutsu Kaisen lovers, it will be boring for you. Me, I can't wait for Season 5.
