95/100An unconventional Romcom, The story of two Ero-loving classmatesContinue on AniList__DISCLAMER__ I want to make this very aware to all, this is a loli-centric ecchi romcom, a lot of you will opt out here. I think that's in your right to as much as i want others to read, suggestive themes with these types of characters is the cornerstone to it's identity. I really do think some themes here are portrayed well, and some I really haven't seen, up until now because of how this manga is setup to operate, it allows for these ideas to be bred.
__Intro__ I think one of the best way to introduce your mangas is with a interesting character or landscape/scenery, yet all that has to happen by the end of the first chapter is that hook sticks in the readers mouth as they bite down into interest. This manga brings fourth a weird or disgusting (depending on what you like) scenario, yet it sets the stage for the remainder of the manga (up until what I've read). It throws this over-used trope of the shy/weird kid who sits in the corner an throws it a larger bone then some, and runs with it.
__Story__ I think for what it is the story is actually pretty good, but this is heavily subjective as it's a niche. The story premises is just a middle school romcom with a wrench set in the middle, and that is Eromanga and how it bonds two characters, with the additive of her being his disciple. It works, mainly in the early chapters it really feels fast and like there might not be depth. As it goes on you start to see them battling with themselves over different ideas and conflicts that also contrast each other. I don't think its the best there is but with this small of a niche to cover, it really hits like a piercing dagger. The only thing I can really compare this to is Nagatoro, yet that feels like sanding with 200 grit sandpaper relative to something like 800 grit. It's kind of the same thing, like yeah it's sandpaper, but its not as fine as a want it, and that's where this manga come in. It just hits those deep notes that satiate what I want, that really aren't relevant in other works. I wanted Nagatoro to be lewder, this hit the nail on the head, not only is it suggestive in the dialogue at times, the art is another section for a reason. In addition, it's also interesting how the author plays with not only with what the characters know but how its depicted in a way that the reader is also left questioning if that's what's truly happening. Yes this trait is also noticeable in other works, though for some reason it feels distinct here, more so that might be from setting the stage so well with what it wants to offer the reader. So here innuendos are plenty in tandem to play with the idea of what is really happening.
Characters As of right now, chapter 33 it's lacking in the development of side characters, they are existent yet I don't feel that much weight from them. It sucks because I think they can make the story even more deviant, or interesting. I don't think you need and ensemble cast but i do wish there was more interaction with the others. Something akin to focusing on them for a while. But they aren't our primary focus, so I think it's fine to say the least, and that where our main characters come in and make up for it.
Fujiwara:
He purposely reads eromanga in class despite what others think, and even though it's weird it's kind of charming in a way. Now this could be done with practically anything taboo, yet where as others come in to have the character be ashamed or arrogant about what they're doing, Fujiwara has this idea that he can't lie to himself, as if he couldn't indulge in the things he enjoys it be an attack to himself. It's the idea of having confidence in what you enjoy, and not to be shamed by doing so. He wants to have a friend yet they have to accept this idea of what he is, so he isn't dissuaded by not having anyone. He also has stuff he likes to do that complements the other sides of him. The main force is him wanting to be a doujin artist, having the ability to have this perfect cycle of reading eromanga almost as a study guide to further himself in the process of becoming an artist.
I don't want to throw everything Fujiwara has to offer on the table right away because it takes away from him. I was surprised at how compelling he can be at times.Sasha (Alexandra Kournikova) :
Is what seems to be a doe-eyed, and innocent middle school girl. She's energetic, is always kind yet stands up for Fujiwara when he needs it, she's fashionably and one point I'd like to bring fourth is how many different looks she has, whether it be the clothes she wears or the hairstyles she is always trying and seen in something new. She has this guard on what she wants, this hold, a protective layer setup around the one she desires. Sasha also is intrigued by the idea of eromanga, ever since the first day and now wants to see the works of Fujiwara come to fruition. She is isolated in the crowds she generates, she's popular yet it's not enough, she hates being alone. I think that's why she holds so dearly to Fujiwara, he's unapologetically himself and sharing that same bond denies shame when interacting with each other. It's not that she isn't having a good time with others, it's that the others don't have this passion that he evokes from eromanga also her parents are divorced, and she's at home most of the time by herself. She's alone and doesn't get the love she properly needs, she fumbles on what a healthy relationship should look like. Or is she finding out what a healthy relationship looks like despite her situation?
Art Art being highly subjective is almost always going to garner some contention, despite that this art feels etheric at times. The way the softness is imbued into the characters make them feel like out of a painting, and at times this enhances the eroticism. I can't get over how beautiful this manga looks sometimes now this is exemplified most prominently in facial features. This is most illustrated in Sashas face, and words cant describe how cute her face is sometimes, I don't even think her face is rivaled by Nagatoro, the expressions she is given is such a staple of the series and it's the pinnacle of how I think facial expressions should be displayed. I am biased, and that's because of the softness, I feel it amplifies her expression of emotion to another level.
By that means most of the characters look good, its just her that mainly sets the stage, and it might be because she's the authors favorite character, so he gives her special care. Yet they all look really pleasant in my humble opinion. I already rambled a little about Sashas outfits, but i can't help but gush, it bring so much to the table to change characters looks, so much life is injected in them when authors do so, it makes them more lively and she is always changing looks and they all look either adorable or fashionable.Routes Now this would be considered the most controversial by far, I think the equivalence would be something akin to 774 since I already make the correlation to Nagatoro so it seems appropriate. This is like how all of Nanashis works are grotesques and abhorrent to say the least for some people, to the point they probably wouldn't read Nagatoro. Yet as 774 changes pennames for adult work and divulges to Nanashi for Sfw content, from my understanding Haguhagu shows face and is full frontal about his works. It actually parallels Fujiwara and his unwavering spirit for his eromanga, he's almost like a self-insert with how he functions. Alas the routes NSFW! this is pure NSFW, all of the routes can play in tandum with the story and can also be thought of as cannon (from my understanding) all of what happens can be thought of when sasha is away, almost like a puzzle to try and figure out when X happened. I love this, and I love how the author isn't afraid to show Sasha get her fix and that he is in control of the characters, drenching us in his passion for eromanga making, whilst also making a compelling and fun story to indulge in. These are all completely optional* as I feel it enhances the experience in it's entirety.
Summary I think if this manga hits, it digs deep and I don't think that a lot of people will share the same sentiment with me. I think this story is highly erotic, it deals with a lot of internal problems but a lot of that might seem to be overshadowed by the lewdness, I personally think this is a perfect blend but this for me just ticks all the boxes, and especially with the routes being a big factor as well. Authors don't need to do side stories yet it's always a pleasure to see them, and to make them more or less cannon is ahh chefs kiss. I think in this day and age there are a lot of people who will criticize this and or do the same to the ones who like it, i'm not writing a perspective like the famous Shoujo Ramune review that reads like a justification for watching/reading what I just did, no this is face value and that at the forefront is Loli backbone built into the entirety of this series and that's kinda just the scratch that needed to be itched. Something depraved/ innocent, something uplifting/ demoralizing and lastly something thought inducing/ regressive, and it really just boils down how you want to see the series.
This is my first review, so I feel there was more to be said, but I wanted to have something on this mangas page, it felt blank and devoid of life as if no sustenance was able to come from this work. It felt like this mangas page was just another random manga that has no value, yet giving it a shot really piqued my interest and I think it will strike a chord if you find any of this interesting. If i did bad in my assessment then read the manga and tell me where I was wrong, and I'll appreciate the discussion if you decide to pursue that.
Other then that I will leave you with a picture of Sasha
