80/100This Cute Slime Anime Can't Possibly Be Good?Continue on AniListPuniru is a Kawaii Slime is not a good show. The small budget is very apparent in low amount of detail in the animation. The gimmick with Puniru shapeshifting is cool, but they don't really do anything interesting with it. They constantly reused the same transformation scene and it's not even that great, it just gets boring fast. The cast is more annoying than interesting and the jokes don't really land. Puniru isn't even that cute, she just looks stupid. I mean, just look at the name of this show. It's so stupid there is no way it could be good...
...
Right?
...
To my absolute surprise, it is. Or rather it becomes good after the first few introductory episodes. At first I was caught off guard by some jokes that were actually funny, then I started laughing at entire episodes. Yes, a lot of jokes early on don't really land but they work at showing us the slime gimmick and its capabilities to help build up increasingly crazy situations the characters happen to get into. The cast wasn't interesting at first, but the show makes a lot of fun at their expense and that works out great. The transformation scene... it does not get better, but it disappears for a few episodes, which I personally appreciated. Even the animation gets more detailed, especially in the summer episode. Puniru's gimmick of shapeshifting and changing properties gets properly expanded and put through some quite interesting situations. And god damn do her new forms sometimes look amazing. Her stupid face grows onto you with time for sure, she is quite cute after all. Also, the ending song unironically bangs.
_ One of the complaints I've heard about the show is that Kotaro, the main male protagonist, is an annoying little shitter. I don't disagree, he is pretty damn annoying, but I'd say it's the entire point of his character. I doesn't quite fit the straight man trope, he's simply more of a... punching bag. Nobody around him takes him seriously and him being a loser is often the butt of the joke. Not always do the jokes at his expense land, but generally he deserves it. This also generally applies to many characters in this anime, they just exist to make fun of and set up scenarios with Puniru at the center, and that's not a bad thing for a short comedy show. The character I have gripes with is Kirara, but mainly because I'm not particularly fond of characters that go into "loud = funny" territory often. Also, she likes children a bit too much, which is... awkward. But still, despite that, there are still some really good moments with her at the center, so it's not really all negatives. I could be slightly mad at a, i would say, "insteresting" ending, but the second season got announced immediately so we're not gonna be left on a cliffhanger, if you could call it that._quite cute indeed.
_ First impressions are often misleading. I watched the first episode with my friend late in the evening at our airbnb, while drinking beer together and chilling after a long day of playing in a mahjong tournament. We found it by total accident while scrolling through CR and just scoffed at it for looking silly. What I said after finishing it is that "it wasn't good, but I also did not hate it" and as a joke I decided to continue watching it on my own when I got back home. It's all because frankly, "Puniru is a Kawaii Slime" is such a dumb name for a show and the cover image did not look great. I really did not expect to actually find it this enjoyable._she's DEAD and YOU did this.
_ Unfortunately this show doesn't look too interesting from the outside and the weak first few episodes did not help with gaining popularity. I still would not call it a "hidden" gem, but it's still an underappreciated comedy show with a silly and fun gimmick that I can sincerely recommend to people. I could call it the opposite of Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan, which had great marketing that made it popular but it turned out to be a flop. Puniru on the other hand has so little interest that barely anyone knows it even exists, but it is actually a pretty good show to kill some time on a slow evening, especially if you're a total moeslop enjoyer such as myself. __almost a bocchi reference.

100/100A Perfect Adaptation of one of my Favourite MangaContinue on AniListI gotta start this review by saying, that I've been reading and loving the original Puniru manga, ever since it got translated all the way back in 2021 and I will mainly talk about it as an adapation of the manga and the things I loved about it.
When they announced the adaptation, I was almost literally counting down the days, until the anime would finally come out.
Altough there was also a bit of fear, since it could have easily become a bad or even mediocre adapatation that's just the manga panels coloured and given some voice acting.
Luckily this wasn't the case at all!
Now this anime is how you do a perfect adaptation of a perfect manga.
It adapts all the scenes from the early chapters, while also doing things like combining chapters or moving them around a bit for better flow or better storytelling, as an adaptation should, instead of just going chapter by chapter. Not only that, there's also a whole bunch of original scenes that weren't present at all in the manga, one of which for example is the opening scene that shows Punirus "birth"
The chosen chapters are also pretty good, as they cover the early chapters and ending just before the beginning of the Gelee arc, which was a pretty call. The story did develop nicely and gave some nice smaller moments, but leaves enough open for season 2 to really start getting into the romance part of the series.
Though the chosen ending point was an original and honestly a pretty hilarious choice.
One of the best things this show added was how it portrayed Puniru transforming into other forms (one of the mangas main-gimmicks being her transforming into a new cute form at least once per chapter). Usually, its only one or two pages long and very short, fitting for the manga.
The Anime changes this...by turning it into a full on a magical girl transformation sequence!
The animation is colourful and fun and fits the mangas themes perfectly. All the colours in this are strong and just fun to look at. Add to that that there are quite a couple of well animated scenes and it definitely feels like how the manga looks in my head, whenever I am reading it.
And a lot of the time, the animation really makes use of her being a living slime, having her stretch and squish and melt and getting cut...this was the biggest thing I was worried about originally with this show, but thankfully the used her being a slime to their full advantage to have some fun with the animation.
(There's also the summer episode, where the animation quality improves even more)
The characters are all also perfectly portrayed and each chosen voice felt like how the character could easily sound. The VAs giving it their all in the more "Over the Top" moments of the show too, adding to the humor and making these moments stick out more when watching it.
Punirus VA especially having to change her voice fitting for each of the forms she takes and doing such a great job at it
(One of my personal favourites)
Overall, after finishing the show, I can't wait for season 2 and hoping that it will keep the same amazing energy and quality as this season did. This show is such an easy recommend in my opinion, both if you read the manga, but also if you have never read the manga before!
I would say this show is only nothing for you, if you can't really stand Punirus more...forceful nature and moments, as those are happening constantly throughout the show. But if you do not have any problems with it, then once again, this show is definitly an easy recommend for me.
And now I will count the days until season 2 finally comes out.
