In the wide, wonderful and wild world of television, there are many different kinds of shows that you could find out there. Some of these shows can be nothing worth watching at all, some of the lowest, bottom of the barrel trash that you could ever find on this side of Bravo, but then you have the BIG shows, the ones that everyone talks about and the ones that are considered to be the absolute best, or ones that are just as good as those other shows, but aren't quite as well known to the public yet. However, then you have all of the shows that are in the center, the ones that take up more space then any others in the entire lot: the middle of the road. These shows aren't necessarily bad or good, simply being there to fill their role of providing content for the viewer to enjoy, regardless of whether or not the intention was to make a middle of the road show or not, and these shows can be seen everywhere, serving as a bit of a breather between all of the good stuff to where you won't be overloaded with too much of it at once. Makes it so that you can go onto appreciating it more. And hell, there have been so many of these shows that have been put out there to the point where now you can just tell exactly how good a show is gonna be most of the time by just taking one glance at it, such as the case with today's show... ahem... Let This Grieving Soul Retire! Woe Is the Weakling Who Leads the Strongest Party..... or just simply Let This Grieving Soul Retire, just to make it a little less of a mouthful to say to someone.
As I do with a lot of the shows that I usually cover, specifically when it comes to this genre of TV, I specifically chose this show because of the fact that it was going to be getting a second season later down the road, and even from just taking one quick glance at it, I already knew EXACTLY what I was in for what checking it out. I mean, come on, all of the signs were there: a title that was way too long for no good reason, a cast of characters that don't look that interesting at all, a general plot and world that sounded about as engaging as a slice of toast, all of it was there and accounted for, letting me know what I was gonna be watching 13 episodes of in the forseeable future. But of course, I didn't want to go into this show thinking it was gonna be completely lifeless and boring all the way through. I mean, there have certainly been shows that have a similar vibe to this that actually did manage to surprise me at the end of the day, so hey, who knows? Maybe this show would be one of the lucky ones that also managed to do that........... it did not manage to do that. It's almost as if this show was made specifically to target that middle of the road category that I mentioned earlier, as while there are some admirable elements and great moments to be found throughout the entire thing, a lot of it does fall under the typical kind of shit that you would come to expect, while also having a set of problems to go alongside that, resulting in a show that is just ok and nothing more at the end of the day.
The story is somewhat creative, being a twist on these types of shows that we have seen a million different times before in anime, but at the same time, I feel like this specific twist is also one that we have seen a million times before in anime, even if I haven't seen any other shows myself personally that do this.... it just FEELS that generic, y'know? The characters are mostly whatever, where there are some pretty likable ones in here like Sitri and Tino, but then there are plenty of others that I feel mostly indifferent towards like Krai and Gark, and even some that manage to annoy me to no end (which I will get to soon enough), all coming together to make for a pretty boring and forgettable cast, the voice acting is alright, where they all do a fine enough performance with all of the roles they are given, and some definitely go out of their way to do a better job then others, but none of the performances really grabbed me or made me feel any kind of emotion that don't just devolve back to "that's anime acting, alright" and nothing more, the animation is alright, looking pretty generic and cheap for a show like this that doesn't have enough going on, or that many impressive visual elements, to make it stand out, but for what it is, it works well enough for this show and it looks pleasant enough to watch all the way throughout, and the action/humor are both pretty basic and forgettable, where it all works well enough for the kind of series this is, and there were some scenes that actually did get me kinda excited or genuinely laughing depending on what was going on, but everything else, as you could expect, it all mostly just doesn't do that much for me.
Now, if I were to give this show some credit, I didn't think everything about it was completely mid, as again, there were plenty of moments throughout the show that I did find to be genuinely entertaining, funny, intense and so on, all of which make the show feel a little better then it already is whenever they do pop up. Not to mention, if there is one thing that I did definitely really like about the show, it's its soundtrack, as stuff like the background tracks and intro song aren't really anything too creative or revolutionary for the genre, they were still pretty good to listen to overall, and I have even pulled up some of these tracks on occasion whenever I am doing other things just so I can have something to listen to. However, that in itself doesn't make the show that much better then what it already was, especially with there being one element of it that I hated right from the moment it showed up in the show: Liz. For those who don't know, she is one of the main characters of the show that shows up in the episode "The Mysterious Mask Wants to Fight", who is one of the members of Krai's hunter clan, and she turns out to be the absolute WORST character in the entire show...... in my opinion anyway. From the moment she is introduced in that episode, she is shown to not only be incredibly annoying, with her tone of voice and fast, exaggerated manner of speaking draining on me anytime she speaks, but she also manages to be extremely arrogant, cocky, and acts like an asshole to most of the people she runs into, ESPECIALLY with Tino, who she constantly abuses and mentally torments throughout the entire series. I myself originally didn't like Tino that much whenever she first showed up, but then once I saw what she was going through with Liz and everyone else, I then started to feel incredibly bad for her, and she ended up becoming one of my favorite characters. Now, I'm not saying that a character like Liz can't work, because it absolutely can, and hell, some of my favorite characters from films, TV shows, video games or what have you are all complete assholes, but there is a certain limit that I am willing to tolerate whenever it comes to this character trait. It also doesn't help that this is how they introduce this character right out the gate, so yeah, already knew from the beginning I wasn't gonna end up liking her.
But overall, despite there being some genuinely great qualities present in the show and Liz being the absolute bane of this show's existence, Let This Grieving Soul Retire is exactly what you are looking for if you are looking for some of the most middle of the road, boring and generic anime content you can find, as that is what it is at the end of the day, and I just found it to be alright as a whole, what with its generic set-up that has a generic twist that somehow makes it even more generic then it already was, characters that range in quality from being pretty likable in a lot of cases to being ones that I can't stand, voice acting and animation that gets the job done but nothing more, and action scenes/humor that do sometimes show some signs of being actually creative, intense and even funny at times, but still mostly reverts back to the same common denominator that you would expect from one of these shows. I would recommend it for those who loved the original manga it was based on, as well as those who don't mind this set-up and all of the things in it that much, but for everyone else, there are certainly many other different shows out there, ones that also have a similar premise to this, that end up being much better then this as a result. Let's just hope that whenever Season 2 comes along, they actually do improve upon what they have here and try some new shit out, which will make it so that I will end up liking the show more. I guess you could also say that, when it comes to waiting for this show's second season to come out, I'm also gonna soon be feeling like a GRIEVING SOUL! HA HA HA HA............. trust me, it's a lot better then most of the jokes you can find in this show.
