63/100A stylish 1989 fantasy OVA with great music, solid animation, and classic revenge-story beats.Continue on AniListLegend of Lemnear (1989)
Legend of Lemnear is a fantasy anime OVA released in the summer of 1989, running just under 50 minutes. It follows the journey of Lemnear, a lone warrior known as the Champion of Silver, who sets out on a revenge quest against the dark forces that destroyed her homeland and killed her family. The story is built on familiar tropes. Revenge, prophecy, hidden power. It's a tight, self-contained tale that does what it needs to do without overstaying its welcome.
Visually, Legend of Lemnear is a product of its time in the best way. The character designs are classic late-'80s anime—think Fist of the North Star or Wizards meets Heavy Metal magazine. There's a heavy emphasis on dramatic shading, flowing hair, and exaggerated anatomy, especially when it comes to Lemnear herself. While the designs aren't groundbreaking, the actual animation quality stands out. For an OVA, especially one from this era, the fluidity in battle scenes and the level of detail in key moments are well above average.
The soundtrack is pure 1980s anime energy. The opening theme is catchy and full of that synth-heavy, power ballad flavor that fans of the era will appreciate. Music plays a big role in setting the tone, especially during action scenes. There's a sense of pacing in the audio that matches the visuals well, elevating moments that could have otherwise fallen flat.
As for the content, yes, it includes the usual late-'80s OVA elements: graphic violence and nudity. Neither feels especially gratuitous within the fantasy setting. This was an era when OVAs were often targeted toward young adults, and Lemnear doesn’t shy away from that.
The voice acting is passable. Nothing particularly memorable, but it fits the tone. The actors deliver their lines with conviction, and while the performances won't win any awards, they do serve the story without getting in the way.
Plot-wise, the story hits expected beats. Lemnear is captured, enslaved, and meets a wise old man who reveals her destiny as the Champion of Silver. From there, it's a straight shot toward vengeance and justice, culminating in a lengthy and surprisingly well-executed battle sequence. That final confrontation takes up nearly half the runtime, but it’s the highlight of the film, combining solid animation with strong music and tight pacing.
There’s nothing revolutionary here, but that’s not the point. Legend of Lemnear doesn’t pretend to be more than what it is: a short, stylish, fantasy action flick that scratches that sword-and-sorcery itch. It's not deep, but it's fun. For fans of vintage anime, especially those who enjoy OVAs from the golden era of home video releases, it’s a solid watch.
Final Verdict: 63/100.
Some aspects are average, others like the music and animation, are notably better. It’s an above-average, enjoyable ride that doesn’t demand much and delivers just enough.
