80/100A big melting pot of a whole bunch of good manga with a generic romcom schemeContinue on AniListOroka na Tenshi wa Akuma to Odoru is what you would typically consider a generic romcom, but for some reason it feels so much better than that.
The plot revolves around a devil who is trying to fix hell who gets forced to become a servant to an angel that wants to reform heaven. The devil is forced to help the angel find other demons to capture or else he will die, but somewhere along the way the begin to fall for each other. It's awfully generic and tropey in terms of premise and quite a few plot points, but it manages to stand out among other romcoms with its approach. While most romcoms tend to take the approach of "make a cute relationship and add a bit of humor to make it interesting", this manga puts most of its chips into the comedy aspect with the romance serving as a mean to deliver the comedy. A big portion of the comedy relies around overexaggerated drawings, much like Grand Blue or Senryuu Shoujo. That being said, it doesn't skimp out on the romance aspect either. The chemistry between the two leads is pretty nice, and it makes it fairly clear as to why they would have fallen for each other. I get vibes of The Devil is a Part Timer with the angel/demon leads who don't like each other at first but then get closer as the story goes on. There are big parts of this manga that also give out vibes of Kaguya-sama Love is War with the way they try to win power over each other by making them fall in love, which I find to be one of the best parts of it so far.
Overall, this manga was a blast to read, even though it's just starting out. Yes it is pretty tropey and yes there are a lot of things that it seems to take from other manga, but the way that it ties it all together is what makes it stand out. It plays so much like a regular comedy manga but it still makes heavy use of romance, which is something that I don't get to see too often. The art is well done and fits the tone of the manga, and the switch-ups in style really add to the comedy aspect of this manga. If there were anything to really fault this manga it would be some of the poor translations in some chapters that make it almost unreadable, but this isn't necessarily the fault of the manga itself. I'd really suggest this manga if you're into more comedic romcoms
